Team Liquid x Earth Day

Team Liquid x Earth Day

Much like the ocean, Team Liquid is made up of millions of life forms: Pro players, coaches, staff, and — most importantly — the fans. They all come together to define and inspire who we are, an esports ecosystem that thrives on passion, kindness, and innovation. While we are known for our teams and players, we should also be defined by what we do beyond the stage.

That’s why we are bringing our streamers and pros together for four days of fundraising in support of Earth Day. From April 19 to April 22, Team Liquid’s content creators will be streaming for donations towards the Earth Day organization itself. That’s right, Earth Day isn’t just a mark on the calendar, it’s one of the biggest and most effective ecological non-profits in the world, one that has increased climate education, pushed for laws to protect the environment, and created the planet’s largest civic event.

This year’s Earth Day is about planet vs. plastics! One plastic bottle doesn’t seem intimidating, but plastic waste is still one of the biggest ecological issues today — and plastic waste exists on a scale so large it’s impossible to visualize.. An estimated 8 million tons of plastics enters our oceans every year, an estimated 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic waste both above and under the surface. At this point, plastic waste makes up 80% of all marine pollution and almost all of it is caused by littering.

“The plastic pollution problem does not start at the middle of the ocean; [it] does not start on our shores or in our rivers: It starts on land. Solutions should be found on land, its source,” said Merijn Tinga, Dutch environmental activist and Plastic Soup Surfer.

Over 300 million tons of plastic is created every year — and since it takes hundreds of years for plastic to decompose, almost 100% of the plastics ever made are still in existence today. That’s why we want to do something about it this Earth Day — not just as an org but as a community!

Since our start as a community website, we know we get a lot more done working as a team over going solo. Like how individual water droplets can come together to move mountains, how a river can cut a path through stone, we can cut down a mountain of plastics together.

And we’ve already seen how much we can do as a community! In the past, we raised over $17,000 USD for Ocean Conservancy during the Vault of the Incarnates raid, and over $35,000 USD for earthquake relief!  We’ve seen our community make waves all over the world, plenty of times. Let’s do it again on Earth Day!

Keep an eye on our socials for the schedule and more information as we get closer to Earth Day, as well as donate and follow along via this link.
